Looking for a prepaid plan with great network coverage, high-value plans, and included extras? If Telstra's too pricey, but you still want the security and service of a top-tier provider, Optus is your go-to telco.
With around 98.5% of Australians covered by Optus networks, getting solid service shouldn't be a problem (even if you live outside the major cities). In terms of the plans themselves, all prepaid options are flexible and contract-free, so you won't be stuck on a plan if you decide Optus isn't right for you.
Most prepaid Optus plans include unlimited standard national calls and texts, plus data and bonus features (including international). Recharges range from $10 up to $60, so no matter your budget, there's an affordable prepaid option to match your needs.
There are three kinds of prepaid plans available from Optus: Prepaid Ultimate Plus, Prepaid Daily Plus, and Prepaid Long Expiry.
Ultimate Plus is basically a standard prepaid plan which, depending on your recharge amount, expires over either 7 or 28 days. You'll get an included talk, text and data amount, plus extras including music streaming and data rollover (as outlined below).
If you opt for a Long Expiry plan, your credit will last either 45, 90, 186, or 365 days (depending on your plan choice). Your credit can be used towards standard Australian calls ($0.20 per minute), text and MMS ($0.20 per message), and data ($0.05 per megabyte).
Optus' Daily Plus plans consist of a $2 daily recharge that gets you 500MB of daily data, plus unlimited talk and text and data-free music streaming. You can charge in credit amounts of $10, $20, $30, $45 or $60, and roll over any unused credit when you recharge before expiry (up to 186 days for the $30, $45 and $60 options).
Signing up for a Daily Plus plan means you'll only be charged the $2 on days you actually use your phone, so it's better for customers who want an emergency-only smartphone. If you're even a light-to-average data user, or someone that calls and texts daily, this plan isn't for you.
Changing your mobile phone provider can seem like a daunting proposition. We often get asked about how long it takes, whether you can keep your number, and when exactly your number changes hands. The good news is that it is very easy to change telco in Australia, and laws exist that protect your right to switch and ensure you always keep your phone number.
Your number is held by your provider, but only as long as you allow them to. If you want to swap to Optus prepaid, your old carrier will automatically relinquish your number and transfer it to Optus when you activate your new service.
Here's the process:
Note that your old service will keep working until porting is completed. This typically takes somewhere between a couple of minutes and an hour or two, but there's cases where it can take a day or if not longer. You'll typically know your Optus prepaid plan is live when your previous service stops working.
SIM cards store very little information these days, which means all of your contacts, phone numbers, emails and photos are either stored on your phone or in the cloud. Switching to Optus will not delete any of your personal information from your device.

There's five main ways to recharge your Optus Prepaid service.
If you want to recharge online, you can do so through Optus' website. Optus accepts credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal. You're able to pay with American Express, MasterCard, Visa, or JCB payment cards. You're also able to set up an AutoRecharge, which can be configured to automatically recharge after a certain number of days, or when your balance is low. The My Optus app - available for Android and iPhone - gives you similar options.
If you don't have a credit card, you can allow Optus to deduct funds directly from a savings or chequing account. To do this, you need to visit Optus' website, and choose the "recharge through internet banking" option. You'll then log into your internet banking account, and choose your recharge option. ANZ, Commonwealth, NAB, St. George, and Westpac are the banks that currently support Optus' internet banking recharge.
Optus prepaid customers can call "555" for free from their prepaid phone to recharge. You'll need a credit card to do so; Optus accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and JCB.
Brick and mortar Optus stores will sell you a voucher that you can use to recharge your plan.
Scan and Go is a new recharge option where you use the Optus website to generate a unique QR code for your recharge. This will be delivered to your phone, and can be saved as image to your photo album, or added to your phone's wallet or passbook app (if it has one).
When you need to top up, take your phone to a 7-11 store and ask for an "Optus Scan and Go" recharge. You'll then need to show the clerk the QR code you have saved on your phone and pay. Your prepaid service will be recharged instantly. Your QR code can be used as many times as you like.
