Samsung Galaxy S8 plans vs. iPhone 7 plans: What's the better deal?

WhistleOut
07 April 2017

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is almost in stores, and a question we've been asked a lot is how S8 plans compare to iPhone 7 plans.

Unfortunately, this isn't the easiest comparison to make: the iPhone 7 is now almost seven months old, while the S8 is a brand new device. iPhones are available in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB units, while both Samsung phones are 64GB only. Not exactly apples to apples.

Another thing to consider is the outright price for all of these phones are different. Here's what it looks like for the smaller phones.

  • Samsung Galaxy S8: $1,199
  • 32GB iPhone 7: $1,079
  • 128GB iPhone 7: $1,229

We took a look at these over a number of different data inclusions across the major providers selling the phones on a plan, and found that a few key trends held firm regardless of your monthly allowance.

When it comes to the 32GB iPhone 7, the Galaxy S8, and the 128GB iPhone 7, there's almost a direct correlation between on-contract pricing and outright. On the whole, 32GB iPhone 7 contracts are cheaper or the same price as Galaxy S8 contracts, while 128GB iPhone 7 contracts are the priciest. This is the same with the outright costs, where the 32GB iPhone 7 is the cheapest, the Galaxy S8 sits in the middle, and the 128GB iPhone 7 is the most expensive.

Oddly, this trend isn't the same with the iPhone 7 Plus and the Galaxy S8+. As with the smaller phones, the 32GB iPhone 7 Plus is cheaper than the Galaxy S8+.

  • Samsung Galaxy S8+: $1,349
  • 32GB iPhone 7 Plus: $1,269
  • 128GB iPhone 7 Plus: $1,419

Despite this, the 32GB iPhone 7 Plus is - across the board - more expensive than the Galaxy S8+ on a contract. This still holds true with the 128GB iPhone 7 Plus model.

While the Galaxy S8+ is the more expensive phone, there is a possible explanation as to why the 32GB iPhone 7 Plus is pricier on contract. A couple of years ago we did some research into iPhone plan prices, and found that plans are always the cheapest at launch. They then get higher throughout the year, and with the iPhone 6, we found that that it was most expensive after around six months of availability.

In fact, when the iPhone 7 launched, it was cheaper on contract than the iPhone 6s. Our assumption is, at launch telcos are trying to compete on price while the latest iPhone is still new, but they go back to competing on network when the hype has subsided.

So to sum up, the difference in plan pricing between the iPhone 7 and S8 models works out to be just a couple of dollars. While a few dollars a month can add up, you shouldn't be looking at much more than $100 over the life of your contract. Unless you really want to save a little extra, given how close the pricing is, we'd say you should buy the phone with the features you're after.
