New Zealand is our closest neighbour, so it's no surprise that many Australians have friends or family across the ditch. You could catch a cheap flight and visit them, but one of these phones plans is almost certainly cheaper.

Telcos with unlimited talk & text to the New Zealand
Many telcos now offer unlimited international talk and text to New Zealand on select plans. These include Amaysim, Boost Mobile, Coles Mobile, Lebara, Optus, Telechoice, Telstra, Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, and Woolworths Mobile.
If you're with one of these providers, it's best to double check your plan's inclusions before you make a call or send a text. While some telcos will offer international calls on every plan, some only include it on their higher price offerings.
Vodafone lets you customise its Red SIM-only plans with the addition of a "global" add-on, which gives you 1000 minutes of talk to New Zealand and unlimited text (as well as 11 other countries). You can take up a Red Global plan on a month-to-month basis, but if you'd like a little extra data, you can sign up for a 12-month contract or pick up a new phone to go with the plan.
Vodafone also offers free international roaming to subscribers visiting New Zealand, which could be a nice bonus if you actually want to fly across the ditch from time to time.WhistleOut's Pick
