Switching mobile services providers might seem like a daunting task, but it is actually a very simple process. The systems used by the carriers make the process of switching fast and easy, and you’ll find that your new carrier will do most of the work for you.
You’ll probably find that the hardest part is picking which new plan to sign up for. Everything after is a piece of cake.
As an example, let’s go through the process of switching to one of Australia’s favourite SIM only phone plan providers, Amaysim to see just how easy to it.
Here are the steps:
- Choose your plan and sign up online (5 - 10 minutes)
- Wait for your new SIM card to come in the post (1 - 2 business days)
- Activate your SIM card online (5 - 10 minutes)
- Wait for your old number to port to your new account (a couple of hours)
Step 1: Sign up online
There are 4 steps in the Amaysim online signup process:
- Choose your plan
- Transfer your existing number, or choose a new phone number for the account
- Enter your details
- Choose a payment method
Step 2: Have your SIM delivered
Amaysim has a couple of different delivery options, but all of them are free.
For most people there is the standard postal option. Anyone in the Sydney or Melbourne CBD districts can opt for a 3-hour same day delivery service.
Step 3: Activate your SIM card
After you have received your new SIM pack, you will need to activate it online. Visit amaysim.com.au/go in your web browser and enter the account details you registered earlier, and the SIM Number on the back of the SIM card you received, and you’re set. As you can see in the image below, you will need to enter details from your ID to complete this process.
Step 4: Number porting
Activating your SIM card will begin the phone number porting process if you chose to transfer your old number to this new service. This process can take a couple of hours, but in our experience it tends to be much quicker.
Amaysim takes care of this step. It contacts your existing service provider and organises the transition. Porting your number also closes your old account, so you don’t need to contact your old provider and do it manually.
And, you can continue using your old service until the new Amaysim service takes over, so there is no downtime for your phone number.
As you can see the process of switching to Amaysim is as simple as signing up for a newsletter on your favourite website. You choose a plan and enter your details and Amaysim will take care of the rest.
Can I bring my own phone to Amaysim?
So long as your phone is compatible with the Optus network and it is not locked by your current provider, then you can bring it to Amaysim.
Generally speaking, if you bought your phone in Australia in the last few years, then it should be compatible and unlocked. The exception is cheaper Prepaid phones which tend to still be sold locked to the carrier that you bought it through.
