One of Australia's largest states, Queensland is a mix of great mobile phone coverage, and enormous dead-spots, especially as you travel north.
Brisbane, the Gold Coast and along the Sunshine Coast all have a solid blanket of coverage across all three Australian mobile networks: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.
But north of Cairns and Port Douglas, the mobile reception is spotty at best. Even the well regarded Telstra network is mostly absent beyond this point.
Coverage in QLD at a glance
What stands out
- While Telstra covers more, Optus has some regional network availability
- Strong cover from all networks along most of the coastline
What could be improved
- Low Vodafone regional coverage means low competition outside of the major hubs.
- Several of the arterial highways only have Telstra reception.
It's important to note that this state-level view gives a good overview of coverage across the state, but you need to zoom in much closer to get a better understanding of how the available coverage might affect you. Big Carriers vs. Small Carriers in QLD
Did you know that there are dozens of small carriers that run on the major networks, but charge a fraction of the price for service? These companies are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators, MVNOs for short. MVNOs purchase network service from the major providers at wholesale prices, then pass the savings on to consumers.
