They say that you 'never, never know if you never, never go' but if you do travel to the Northern Territory with plans to visit the outback, don't expect to get much of a signal.
With a huge amount of land, and a comparatively tiny population, the Northern Territory is a perfect storm for poor mobile phone coverage. Locals won't need us to tell them that if you leave Darwin, you can pretty much leave your phone at home.
Telstra does offer some service as you travel south from Darwin, towards Alice Springs, and all of the networks cover Uluru, which is great for posting your travel photos. But the rest of the NT is one, big black spot.

Big Carriers vs. Small Carriers in NT
Did you know that there are dozens of small carriers that run on the major networks, but charge a fraction of the price for service? These companies are known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators, MVNOs for short. MVNOs purchase network service from the major providers at wholesale prices, then pass the savings on to consumers.
