Yatango Customers: Here’s What to Do Next

12 October 2015

As you might have heard, Yatango Mobile has recently entered voluntary administration. This doesn’t affect the service of current customers right now, but it could mean that customers could be looking for a new service provider soon — depending on the outcome of the process.

If you are a current Yatango customer, and you’d like to avoid any delays in switching in the future, then now is a great time to weigh up your options. The process of switching is extremely straight forward, but there are still several important decisions to make.

1. Stay on the Optus 4G network?

The Yatango service utilises the Optus 4G network, and if you’ve been happy with your coverage while you’ve been a Yatango customer, there is no reason to switch.

There are a lot of options for providers using the Optus 4G network — it is far and away the network most used by Australia’s mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). If you haven’t come across this information before, the concept is pretty simple. There are 3 networks in Australia owned by Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. And, by networks we mean towers, cables and the airwaves in between. MVNOs buy services from the network operators and resell them to their customers. This is why they are known as ‘virtual network operators’.

So, if you want to switch from Yatango, but want to stay on the Optus network, you can choose from the list of telcos below:

Bendigo Bank Telco

Dodo Mobile

Jeenee Mobile

Virgin Mobile

Live Connected

iPrimus Mobile

2. Time for a change?

Alternatively, you can make a big switch to a provider on the Telstra or Vodafone networks. The process is exactly the same, and just as fast, but you will need to make sure you can get good reception on either of these networks before you make the change.

The most reliable way to do this is to ask a friend in your area who uses one of these networks about their experience. Do they have good reception inside their house? Is thee a clear signal during their daily commute? Would they recommend the network to you?

If you can’t find someone to help you test, you can go to the supermarket and grab a cheap SIM card from the provider you plan on switching to. Insert the SIM into your phone and see what the signal is like. Remember to test in the difficult spots — places where you know you’ve had reception problems in the past.

Here is a list of Telstra and Vodafone providers:

3. Understanding the switching process

If it’s been a long time since you last switched providers, and you’re concerned about the difficulty is making a switch: don’t worry. The process is ridiculously easy.

It’s quick too, you can literally pop into a store during your lunch break, buy a SIM card, enter your details on a computer and in most cases the switch will take place before you leave the office in the evening. Technically the telcos say it can take up to 48 hours to move your number, but in our experience is it much, much faster.

If you want more information, here is a link to our detailed guide to switching your provider and keeping your number.

And that’s about it! If Yatango Mobile does close down as a result of the administration process, you’ll be well prepared to move your service to a different provider without any fuss or worry.
