Virgin, Vodafone Go To War with Big Data Deals

WhistleOut
03 June 2015

Vodafone is on fire with recent bonus data deals and Virgin Mobile is keeping pace. Australia’s third and fourth-largest telcos are currently going MB for MB on most of their post-paid plans. The result? More than double the standard data inclusions on some plans, and still-generous extras on others.

There is plenty to love about both Virgin and Vodafone, so in the event of a draw in our comparison, you should think about which network you would prefer to be on. Virgin operates over the Optus 4G network, while Vodafone runs on its own 4G network.

You should also consider which extra features each telco has to offer. For example, Virgin customers enjoy Data Rollover, giving them a second chance to get through unused data from one month to another. Vodafone customers pay only $5 per day to use their phone plans when overseas.

Note: Those looking at Virgin deals should also know that, in order to be eligible, you must be either an upgrading Virgin customer, or transferring from a provider that does not also use the Optus network. That means current Optus, Amaysim, Vaya, Yatango Mobile, Jeenee, Spintel, Bendigo Bank telco, iiNet and TPG mobile subscribers won't get bonus data when switching to Virgin.

The plans

For this comparison we'll focus on 24 month plans that include the option to add a new phone. This is the easiest and often cheapest way to get a new phone, if you need one. Just remember: you may end up paying a bit more on top of these plan prices for your new handset, depending on just how fancy a phone you want.

Virgin is the clear winner at these lower price points. With no bonus data on offer from Vodafone, the 1.5GB Virgin delivers two- or three-times the data for the same price -- when you sign up before the end of June.

Vodafone is a better option if you send a lot of texts, especially if you send text messages to friends and family living overseas.

We have a tie! So, it's down to which network you prefer: Optus or Vodafone.

Vodafone offers Data Workout on this plan and higher, which means unlimited data for your first 2 months. You also access the aforementioned $5 per day roaming in 47 countries outside of Australia.

Virgin's plan includes $200 of value for calls and text to overseas numbers. You'll also be part of its data rollover scheme, meaning any unused data, calls and text from this month will be available for you next month.

Virgin Mobile wins again with 5GB compared to Vodafone's 4GB. The same plan features for Virgin's last plan are included here, with some upgrades. This time there is $300 for overseas calls and text, as well as rollover for your unused data and other inclusions.

Vodafone may be short in data, but we're in to its Red Plan territory now, thick with features. This $70 plan comes with 300 minutes of international calls, infinite international texts, Data Workout (infinite data for the first 2 months), $5 per day roaming to 47 countries and your choice of a 6 month subscription to Spotify Premium, Stan or the SMH.

Another draw in terms of data. Vodafone's $80 Red Plan has two simultaneous deals going, which stack with one another. The double data promotion will end June 30, where the 1GB bonus data offer is ending much sooner on June 10.

As with the previous Red Plan, this one comes with 300 minutes of international calls, infinite international texts, Data Workout (infinite data for the first 2 months), $5 per day roaming to 47 countries and your choice of a 6 month subscription to Spotify Premium, Stan or the SMH.

Virgin's 9GB plan is a little less confusing: a straight 5GB bonus offer, which means Virgin will have the more generous offer once Vodafone's 1GB bonus side deal ends on June 10. You also get $300 value for overseas calls and text, as well as Data Rollover.

A familiar sight by now. Vodafone's $100 Red Plan has the same two offers: double data and 1GB, with the same separate end dates of June 30 and June 10, respectively.

As a Red Plan, it one comes with 300 minutes of international calls, infinite international texts, Data Workout (unlimited data use for the first 2 months), and $5 per day roaming to 47 countries. You can also choose a full 12 month subscription to either Spotify Premium, Stan or the SMH.

Virgin's 13GB will again be better once Vodafone's 1GB bonus side deal ends on June 10, but once you're talking about these numbers 1GB is unlikely to make a big difference. You also get $300 value for overseas calls and text, as well as the standard data and call/text rollover.
