Best Plans on the Telstra Network

Telco tower at sunset

Telstra has great coverage, but choosing Telstra often means paying a premium. Fortunately, you can get Telstra coverage and still seriously cut down on your monthly spend. In some cases, you might be able to halve your bill and not give up any of the service you use everyday.

What you might not know is that there are a number of smaller providers re-selling services on the Telstra network. We know these are Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) and the term applies to any mobile service provider which doesn’t own network infrastructure — namely any company other than Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Instead, these providers resell services from the major operators.

Choosing a Telstra network MVNO is a great idea. In most cases, you’ll need to bring-your-own phone, but you should notice the savings right away. Woolworths Mobile has however started also sell phones on a contract, and offers the latest and greatest devices from Samsung and OPPO.

Woolworths Mobile: like its promise for grocery shoppers, the value in Woolworths Mobile is offering mobile phones and plans for less. Woolies stands apart as one of the few MVNOs that sells premium smartphones on plans.

Belong: is actually owned by Telstra, and is an extension of its discount broadband brand. Belong Mobile is about simplicity, and offers just two plans. Both plans are data-only, but unlimited talk and text and international calls can be bolted on as extras. Notable differences include data gifting and data rollover.

Boost Mobile: aimed at a younger demographic, Boost Mobile is a great choice for well priced plans, and a good place to buy super cheap handsets from as well.

Aldi Mobile: like Woolies, Aldi sells SIM cards online and through its supermarket chain. Unlike Woolies, you have to BYO phone to an Aldi plan.

Telechoice: is one of the best known MVNOs and has been around for years. While you can't buy phones on plans, Telechoice kiosks stock a range of the latest handsets.

CMobile: one of the tiniest of the tiny telcos, CMobile offers good plans, and the choice of either Telstra or Vodafone coverage with 'Blue' and 'Red' plan options.

Southern Phone: a phone and internet service provider, Southern Phone offers bundles for all telecommunication products in one bill.

The downside is that Telstra only re-sells its 4G network, not its next-generation 4GX network. However, this doesn't make too much of a difference in terms of speed. This network can achieve speeds up to 50Mbps, whereas 4GX can deliver speeds over 200Mbps on select smartphone. While 4G is slower than the 4GX network, 50Mbps is still faster than the vast majority of fixed-line internet connections in Australia.

There are other benefits to going with Telstra: you'll get data-free access to Apple Music, Telstra Air hotspot domestically and overseas, and if you're spending at least $30 a month, you'll get access to Telstra Sport, which provides live and data-free streaming of every AFL, NRL, and Netball game this season. Some of these have started trickling down to MVNOs though; Boost, for example, now also offers data-free Apple Music.

But if you don't need or want any of these extras, you'll got plenty of Telstra network service providers to choose from, including big names like Woolworths Mobile and Aldi Mobile. Below are links to all the current providers, or read on for our picks for the best plans on offer.

Best Telstra MVNO plans with at least 1GB of data

If you'd regard yourself as someone who uses their smartphone less frequently, the best low-use plans across Telstra Network providers are all Prepaid plans.

In fact, these plans are great options, even plans offered by Telstra itself. The trade-off is convenience; rather than the account auto-renewing each month, you will need to stay on top of your billing cycle and recharge your account to keep it active.
