Editor's pick: the best horror movies on Netflix Australia

Halloween is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with a horror movie or five? We've picked our favourites from the myriad of options you've got to choose from on Netflix Australia, and whether you're into psychological horror, slasher flicks, or so-bad-they're-good scares, we've got something for you.

It Follows

It Follows is silly on paper but terrifying in execution; it's about a curse that gets passed from victim to victim through sex. If you catch the curse, you're endlessly pursued by a shapeshifting follower that can assume random human forms. Well, until it kills you. And the only way to save yourself is pass the curse onto someone else. It might sound puerile, but impeccable cinematography, style, and performances make It Follows one of the best horror movies in recent years, and certainly one of the best you can stream on Netflix.

You're Next

"The Final Girl" is a time-honoured tradition in the horror genre, but You’re Next makes it extra satisfying by introducing a female lead that relies on more than just dumb luck to take down the big baddies. Aussie heroine Erin shows an unexpected aptitude for killing, when her American boyfriend’s extremely irritating family become the targets of a mysterious group of masked murderers. Watching Erin gorily turn the tables on the would-be killers is almost as fun as watching her paramour’s idiot siblings get taken out one by one.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil subverts the ‘murderous hillbillies’ trope immortalised by infamous slashers such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the The Hills Have Eyes, when two innocent and well-meaning rednecks are mistaken for crazed killers by a group of sexy co-eds on a Cabin In The Woods-style vacation. The result? Cliches (and bodies) get torn up in a series of freak accidents and wacky misunderstandings.

Coraline

Coraline is a beautifully animated stop motion horror based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name. It follows an adventurous young girl - the titular Coraline - who finds herself in a parallel world that quickly transitions from dream to nightmare. While you could technically call Coraline a kid's movie - it's really the only family friendly pick in this list -, it's nonetheless wonderfully creepy. Think The Nightmare Before Christmas, but more sinister.

Green Room

Patrick Stewart is best known for playing on-screen good guys, but his role as a ruthless Neo-Nazi in Green Room proves there’s more to the beloved actor than being Ian McKellan’s BFF. When a touring punk rock band walk in on a murder at an isolated skinhead club, Stewart’s posse of Hitler-loving thugs will stop at nothing to eliminate all witnesses. Truthfully, Green Room is more thriller than traditional horror, but when the violence starts, it’s shocking, visceral, and frighteningly real.

The Invitation

We've all been to an awkward party, but The Invitation is the awkward dinner party to end all awkward dinner parties. Protagonist Will is invited to a soiree hosted by his ex-wife and her new partner at his old home, which is unpleasant enough. To make matters worse, it turns out the new couple is part of support group that sounds more than a little cult like and they're very keen on sharing the love. It's a tense, uncomfortable slow burn.

Jennifer's Body

Here’s what you need to know about Jennifer’s Body: it was written by Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. A grieving mother describes her dead son’s mutilated body as resembling 'lasagna with teeth'. There’s a (not-so) virgin sacrifice gone wrong, and some not-explicit, but definitely noticeable, parallels between the demonically-possessed Jennifer and Jesus Christ. Critics may not have loved it (probably because they're wrong), but the black humour and free-flowing blood make Jennifer’s Body an underrated horror-comedy gem.

Hansel & Gretel Get Baked

Loosely based on the Grimm Brothers fairytale, Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (get it?) adds a stoner subplot to the classic story of a cannibal witch who meets her match in a pair of ingenious siblings. Brother and sister duo Hansel and Gretel take on a murderous, marijuana-loving sorceress who uses an especially potent strain of weed to lure unsuspecting teens into her home (and subsequently, into her oven).

Are you on the right broadband plan for Netflix?

Streaming is one of the most data intensive things you can do online, so it's important to consider what broadband provider you're with and what plan is best for you. If you're not careful, Netflix can make a serious dent in your monthly data allowance. But if you pick the right plan, you can binge endlessly without having to keep one eye on your broadband bill.

Netflix has three quality settings for when you're streaming in your web browser, on your smart TV, or on your game console.

  • Low: 300MB per hour
  • Medium: 700MB per hour
  • High: 3GB per hour for HD, 7GB per hour for 4K

If you haven't adjusted these, there's a good chance that your quality is set to auto, which means you're streaming at the highest quality possible based on your device and internet connection. The many Australians will find Netflix opts for a HD stream.

If you're streaming on high (or auto), streaming a single feature length film on Netflix will use somewhere around 6GB. If you're streaming on a regular basis, we tend to recommend plans with at least 500GB as a minimum to ensure you've still got enough data left for everything else you want to do online.
